Morton High School (MHS) is the home of the Potters and serves students in grades nine through 12. In addition to a full complement of academics and athletics, MHS undertakes much more to develop well-rounded students and citizens, including the Athletic Training Program, which gives students the opportunity to learn proper care of injuries, proper methods of taping to prevent injuries and simple principles of physical therapy. The U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington, D.C., which hosts juniors and seniors in student government and Camp Courageous, is a supportive and fun one-day camp for children ages 5 through 18 who have lost a loved one.
The Madrigal Singers spice up the holiday season with a taste of the British Isles. On campus, the Bertha Franks Performing Arts Center is the venue for many concerts, plays and other school and community presentations. Morton is the only public school system in the area with such a facility.
The MHS Band was the 1998, 1999, and 2001 Illinois Class 4A Colorguard Champion. It has several divisions, including the Marching Band, the Concert Band and Symphonic Band, the Pep Band, the Jazz Band, the Brass Ensemble and the Pit Orchestra. The band performs for ht school musical, Madrigal dinner and graduation ceremony. Band members also choose to participate in All-District, All-State Bands, throughout the year.
The Technical Preparation Committee at MHS works to help graduates who want to enter technical fields. For students who choose the vocational education track, the “2+2+2” program, operated in Cooperation with Illinois Central College and Caterpillar, Inc., is an exciting option. It allows students to take college and technical courses while working in their chosen field during the last two years of high school. There is a similar program for nursing that works in cooperation with area hospitals.
